Acknowledgements acknowledged

Funny how the past comes flying in your face sometimes, leaving a smile.

As that sounds kind of abstract, let me explain. Just now as I went on Google Scholar to see if my first academic publication to a double-blind peer-reviewed international journal already came up (which, hurray, it did, see here), I stumbled upon my name in a few more unexpected places.

Namely, as acknowledgements for contributions made to two books published in 2007 and 2010. The latter, a volume on sociological theory, spoke of contributions by students in ways in which "they are often not aware of" (well, right he was). The former, a book on wages and currency from antiquity to the twentieth century, thanked me for editorial contributions (and, whilst at it, even took my name up in the index at the end of the book!). This reminded me of those friendly and interesting people at the University of Warwick and IISG in Amsterdam that I worked with between 2004 and 2008. And left a smile on my face.

Conclusion: Google yourself from time to time - you'll be surprised.

Earth Hour: doe mee en doe de electriciteit uit

Morgen is het weer zover, tijd voor het jaarlijkse Earth Hour. Een belangrijk initiatief, zo vindt Treasure Fleets.

Sinds een aantal jaar zetten miljoenen mensen over de hele wereld een keer per jaar een uur alle lichten uit onder het motto: "what are you willing to do to save the planet". Daarmee geven ze een belangrijk signaal af en degenen die in posities verkeren om internationaal het energieverbruik, en daarmee de CO2-uitstoot, structureel omlaag te brengen. Burgers willen op deze manier aangeven: wij zijn bereid aan besparing bij te dragen. Het initiatief komt van het WNF, en wordt onder andere gesteund door mijn werkgever, de Universiteit Utrecht.

Morgen is het weer zover. Van 20:30 tot 21:30 gaan de lichten uit. Een kleine moeite, maar een groot gebaar.

Integratiedebat deel MLCXVIII: Hirsch Ballin komt met een duidelijk weerwoord

Hehe, éindelijk weer eens een geluid waarin ik me herken in het grootste debat van onze tijd: het integratiedebat. Nota bene van voormalig CDA-minister en hoogleraar internationaal recht aan de UvA Hirsch Ballin. PVV-stemmers mogen roepen dat ze zich niet vertegenwoordigd voelen, ik begin me inmiddels ook aardig ongemakkelijk te voelen op de manier waarop de politiek alles wat niet-Nederlands is tegemoet treedt.

Zo niet Hirsch Ballin. Die stelt het doodverklaren van de multiculturele samenleving door meerdere Europese leiders aan de kaak: wat is dan het alternatief? Een monoculturele samenleving? Althans, zo vat het NRC-weblog over recht en bestuur het samen.

Graduated

Yesterday, I defended my master thesis in front of an audience of academics and friends. Henceforth, I can place MSc behind my name.

The defence entailed a presentation and debate with the audience on my thesis titled "Opening up: The Council's changing discourse on transparency of the European Union". It deals with the changing attitude towards opening the administration up for the wider public. Within a period of twenty years, the Council's attitude towards transparency has changed dramatically. The thesis seeks to address the questions of how and why this happened.

My gawd, what a summer!

This sure is an exceptionally rumbling summer. Let's hope it stays that way: exceptional.

Summer 2011: Greece on the brink of banruptcy from June onwards. Rain all through July. Crazy extreme-right conservative kills over 80 people which he sees as a way to "rescue" his country. August: Spain and Italy nearly drag the EU into an economic abyss that it won't be able to crawl out of. Like the USA, the EU has the greatest trouble to find a politically workable solution. European leaders pose unconvincingly, late, and half-hearted. And now: London and other English cities burning and looted, for several days on end. Is this summer an exception, or part of a pattern?
